From Reductive to Holistic and Ecological

Adaptive Thinking

The Competence Trap

Your expertise has been hiding something from you

What does your organization train your attention to notice about all else?

Where else in your life is that pattern running the show without you knowledge?

When the familiar no longer works,
something deeper is required

Dawna Jones works at the intersection of complexity science, living systems thinking, and human capacity — helping individuals, teams, and organizations develop the inner agility that conditions increasingly demand.

Seeing into the Heart of
Impossible Complex Situations

A keynote by Dawna Jones

When conditions are genuinely uncertain — when the familiar no longer works and the way forward isn't clear — most responses make things worse. We grasp for control. We treat uncertainty as a problem to fix. We wait for someone to have the answer.

What if uncertainty isn't the enemy? What if how you relate to it is the real variable?

Drawing on living systems science, forty years of working at the intersection of complexity and human capacity, and one of the most underexamined stories in crisis navigation — the crew of the Fukushima Daini nuclear plant in 2011 — this keynote offers a fundamental reframe of what it means to be adequate to genuinely complex conditions.

While a sister plant failed catastrophically, the Daini team prevented a second disaster through four principles that had nothing to do with rank, procedure, or control. Their example isn't just inspiring. It's instructive — and it maps directly onto what teams and organizations need right now.

What participants leave with

A reframe of security — from something the world provides to an inner capacity you build

A working understanding of how fear functions as information rather than obstruction

The four principles that allowed a team under existential pressure to stay coherent and effective

A new lens on their organization's response to complexity — and what's actually available

  • 45–60 min + Q&A

"The fundamental shift is moving from security being centered in external conditions — to security centered in you, and your ability to adapt as conditions change."

Adaptive Agility: Navigating Uncertainty
from the Inside Out

A two-day keynote and workshop experience

A keynote shifts perspective. A workshop makes that shift operational. Together, they do something neither can accomplish alone — they take people through a genuine reorientation and give them the tools to use it.

The keynote (Day 1, 45–60 minutes) opens with the human story — what it actually takes to move through sustained uncertainty without losing your footing. It builds through the Fukushima Daini case and closes with a question that stays with participants overnight: What are the conditions you're being asked to become adequate to?

The workshop (Day 2, half-day or full day) returns to that question as a working question. Using the four Daini principles as a diagnostic framework, participants examine their own team or organizational conditions — not as a theoretical exercise, but as applied sensemaking. Where are we acknowledging evolving reality? Where are we protecting familiar expectations that no longer serve?

The integration between the two sessions is intentional. People sleep on the keynote. They arrive at the workshop already processing. That gap is doing work no single-day program can replicate.

What participants leave with

  • A shared language for uncertainty and adaptive response across the team

  • Applied diagnostic capacity using the four Daini principles on real conditions

  • Clarity on where the organization is meeting complexity with old-system responses

  • A concrete shared goal for the next phase of their work together
